On top of Wisconsin: Timm’s Hill

As our travel plans for 2023 took shape, it was beginning to seem as though it would be another year in which I maybe, possibly, hopefully squeezed in one single state high point. After only managing one high point in 2022 as well this was a little disappointing. But I had so many other things planned that I couldn’t really be too upset about it.

But then, the arrival of a surprise invitation to Minnesota presented the opportunity to add not one, but two more high points to my list this year. The Minnesota high point was the intended destination for this trip – more to come in a future post – but we weren’t about to fly all the way there without seeing what else we could do while we were in the area.

So I spiraled into travel planning mode, and a full weeklong vacation was born.

The trip began with two days in Minneapolis hanging out with some family. Our visit just so happened to overlap with a cousin’s birthday, so we spent one of the days at the Mall of America amusement park celebrating with them.

From here, we set off for the highest point in Wisconsin: Timm’s Hill, elevation 1951 feet (595 m). This is the 39th highest US state high point; quite the contrast from our most recent trek up Colorado’s high point, which is the 3rd highest.

But first, we stopped for beer flights at Leinenkugel’s in Chippewa Falls. We’ve been enjoying their beer for years so it was exciting to visit the actual brewery and visitor center. We didn’t have time to take the tour, but I kind of wish we did because they’ve been around for 150 years and I’m sure the interior of the brewery is really neat. Instead, we enjoyed two flights, allowing us to sample 12 of their beers, and then we were on our way.

Timm’s Hill is about 90 minutes north of Chippewa Falls, near no town you’ve probably ever heard of unless you’re very familiar with central Wisconsin. It’s not really on any signs, either, so be sure you have correct driving directions (and screenshot them, because there isn’t a lot of phone service). The hill is the centerpiece of Timm’s Hill County Park.

We started out by accidentally walking part of the Ice Age Trail, which is a lengthy national scenic trail that traces the edge of the glacier that covered this area during the last ice age. It was a nice walk through the forest… but was not the right trail for this venture.

After locating the actual trail which was a little further up the one-way road through the park we set off for the actual high point. It’s only about a 5-10 minute walk through the woods with just a little elevation gain.

At the high point, there’s a mailbox with the summit register and summit sign, and a large observation tower, which proved to be the hardest part of this “hike” with its many stairs.

But it’s worth the climb, because the high point itself is in the trees but from the top of the tower you have 360° views.

I took photos looking in all directions, but they all look fairly similar so here are just a couple of them

And that’s about all there is to say for this one.

So we headed back to the car and then continued our drive up to the northern coast of Wisconsin and Lake Superior, where we would be spending the next two days.

More to come soon. Stay tuned!

The Important Stuff:

  • Getting there: Timm’s Hill County Park is located off WI Highway 86 just a few miles west of Ogema. A GPS should get you there, but phone service is limited so screenshot the directions in advance. Here is more information as well as an address.

  • Fees and passes: none.

  • Hiking: not really much of one, it was about a 15 minute walk roundtrip and I did it in sandals without issue. However, if you struggle with stairs or dislike heights you may opt to skip the climb up the tower.

  • Where to stay: somewhere else; this is a small county park that really only exists because of the high point. There’s not much else around, so Timm’s Hill is probably best visited as a quick stop on your way through the region.

  1. The Leinenkugel Brewery looks a little like a movie set! Timms Hill looks awesome! Is it a higher point than Blue Mound?

    1. I haven’t actually climbed Blue Mound yet but I think they’re somewhat similar in height.

  2. This looks like such a nice hiking spot! Great travel information too!

  3. Hell, wish I knew you were going by Leinenkugel’s. I would have had you pick me up a tee shirt. They have a killer logo with the Indian Chief head. I usually drink a couple of their Summer Shandys every year.

    1. Aww man I didn’t know you’d want one. They have a huge gift shop so I’m sure they had some.

  4. How nice to spend time with family, get some sightseeing in and cross another high point off your list. I couldn’t help but laugh about how you sampled some beers before tackling the highest point in Wisconsin. But it doesn’t sound like it was a super challenging hike or anything. Nice views from the tower.

    1. Haha yeah, not super challenging. Plus it was far enough away that the effects had worn off by the time we got there.

  5. I love your high points challenge, and the views from the tower on this one are great – I can never get over just how big and open views can be in the US, it’s just a totally different scale to here.

    1. Thanks Hannah! It’s funny that you say that because to me this view wasn’t wide open at all with all the trees. There are high points in the western US where the view extends even further. I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective.

  6. I love your goal of seeing all the high points! And that you could both check two more high points off your list and meet up with a blogging buddy just makes it all the better 🙂

    1. Thanks! It was a fun trip all around 😊

  7. Glad you tied these states in Diana. We were impressed with our travels through Wisconsin and Minnesota in 2018. We did not manage any hikes, but we saw stuff. Have a great Tuesday. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan!

  8. I grew up in the Midwest but never made it to MN or WI. I’m excited to read about the blogger meetup, it’s always fun meeting online friends in real life. It feels like you’ve known them forever!

    1. It does, it was so strange meeting them when I felt like I already knew them. It’s also always interesting how your brain fills in the gaps about the things you don’t know (their names, for example) and then you meet them and realize you were way off base!

  9. All of your photos are great (particularly the cat), but the ones from the observation tower show how lush and green the area is; lovely!

  10. This is such a great post, Diana, and so are the unobstructed views of the surrounding Wisconsin landscape from the wooden observation tower! Fall would be a particularly beautiful time to visit when the trees are changing colour. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Very true, Aiva! Fall would also have many fewer mosquitoes, which unfortunately plagued much of the rest of our trip.

  11. That view is so Midwest . . . nothing but conifers for miles and miles – haha. I have a feeling that “hike” is in my future, whether I like it or not (the husband thinks the highest road we can cycle is near Tmm’s Hill). Love the picture in the Leine Lounger. I’m so glad you got to get in a whole bunch of adventures during your week.

    1. I wonder if it’s the road up to the trailhead? That would make it pretty easy to knock off both. Hopefully you can find some other things to add to your trip as well, though I’m not sure what else is around in the middle of Wisconsin. Perhaps something related to cheese…?

  12. Hi Diana! Really nice post and great to see the Timm’s Hill Tower! The 360 view from the top is really really nice! Also very interesting to get to know about the Ice Age Trail.

Well done Diana. Looking forward for your upcoming posts.

    1. Thank you!

  13. Now this is a state high point I can envision conquering! Never been to Minnesota, but it looks absolutely green and so pretty. Can’t wait to read more of your travels there and in Wisconsin, as it’s a part of the US I’ve yet to see!

    1. Haha yes, as long as you can manage stairs and heights, you’d be able to do this one fairly easily. Hopefully my upcoming posts will give you some ideas of things you can do should you make it to MN and WI someday.

  14. Hope you get to some more high points soon!

    1. One more planned for Labor Day, though it depends on my husbands work schedule 🤞🏼
