Snapshots from the sky: Colorado to Montana

I know I said a couple weeks ago that posts about our Thanksgiving roadtrip to Utah were upcoming – and they are – but I’ve decided to shake things up a bit and talk about our Christmas trip to Yellowstone National Park first.

For the last few years, my family and I have repeatedly found ourselves in the same situation: a birthday or holiday is upcoming, we ask people what they want as a gift, and they really just don’t have a good answer because none of us need any more stuff. In fact, we’ve all been trying to reduce the amount of stuff we have just lying around.

And so after Christmas 2023, we floated an idea: what if, instead of gifts, we pooled our money the next year and went on a Christmas trip instead? Like, for example, a winter journey into the heart of Yellowstone National Park – something we’ve all wanted to do for years.

It took very little convincing to get everyone on board, and knowing how popular Yellowstone is, we set about making reservations in January.

(A quick glance at the website reveals last minute reservations are still available, so perhaps we didn’t need to book quite so far in advance, but we weren’t taking any chances.)

And so, a few days before Christmas, we all hopped on a plane to Montana.

I’ll be talking quite extensively about our time in Yellowstone over the next couple weeks, but first I wanted to share some photos from the plane as the next installment of my Snapshots from the sky series.

When you fly from Colorado to Montana, the typical flight path goes right over Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and – if it’s daytime and the sky is clear and you’re sitting on the left side of the plane (when facing forward, meaning choosing seats on your right as you board) – you can actually make out quite a few of the major attractions in each park.

I wasn’t expecting clear skies in the winter, and there were some clouds over parts of Wyoming, but I snagged a window seat anyway, and there were enough breaks in the cloud cover for us to see quite a bit.

Left, wide open and covered in snow: Hayden Valley.

Above and to the right of center: thermal features, including lots of steam and an erupting geyser.

Our flight back to Colorado the following week was later in the day and much more overcast, but as we climbed through the layers of clouds, the setting sun put on quite a show.

And with that, we were back in Colorado for the last few days of 2024.

  1. Loved both the mountain shots and the sunset, Diana. Taking photos from airplane always provides a different perspective. And I like the Christmas idea. Speaking of air views Peggy and I flew into and out of LAX on Thursday. The night views of the fire were frightening.

    1. Oh gosh, I can only imagine. I flew out of Colorado 3 years ago during the Marshall Fire and even though it was much smaller, it looked apocalyptic from the air.

      1. A sign of the future, I’m afraid Diana, unless we seriously change our ways.

Beautiful photos. Yellowstone and Montana are both on my list so it’s definitely somewhere I’m intrigued to hear more about, looking forward to the upcoming posts!
Completely relate to the idea of wanting less gifts and doing more things though so this is an excellent idea for a Christmas break too! 🙂

    1. The first of two will be posted tomorrow 🙂

  3. What a fabulous idea for a family trip for Christmas. Beautiful captures from up in the air. Looking forward to hearing more about your time in Yellowstone in the winter.

    1. Thank you!

  4. These are gorgeous shots! What a great way to spend the holidays with family. A good tradition to start!

    1. Thanks, Denise!

  5. Very pretty! Looking forward to your posts. Great idea, by the way, pooling your money for travel. The Husband and I stopped Christmas gifts (except stocking stuffers) a few years ago and we’ve never looked back. We don’t always replace them with travel, but we’re pleased with the decision just the same.

    1. We likely won’t travel every year either, especially since we alternate whose family we spend Christmas with. But like you, I don’t mind either way. We don’t need physical gifts.

      1. Except I would accept a Delta gift card. Hee hee.

  6. We flew from PDX to Denver for our honeymoon in 2013 and were treated to a stunning sunset over the Rockies at 30,000 feet. I’ve never forgotten that.

    1. Oooh I bet that was a great flight in terms of views! I didn’t realized you’d honeymooned in Colorado.

      1. We’re big Denver Broncos fans, so our honeymoon was a football game, lol. Great one too. Peyton Manning engineered a come-from-behind victory and we whipped the Redskins’ butts. So much fun!

  7. I always love an airplane window shot, sunrise and sunsets are always magical. Can’t wait to read about your Yellowstone trip, and love the idea of doing it instead of getting gifts!!

    1. Thanks, Hannah. The post is slowly coming together… mostly held back by the huge number of photos I have to sort through haha!

  8. I love airplane pics!!

  9. These are stunning photos. Clear and well shot. And the view itself is gorgeous as well. Plus this is such a great idea because overconsumption and stuff lying around is such a major problem. I am going to pitch this idea to my family. Thanks for the idea.

    1. Thanks! My husband and I have been doing anniversary trip instead of presents for years and it’s always so worth it. I hope your family is on board and you can do something similar!

      1. I hope so too thanks again for the idea

  10. Wow, so many beautiful photos. When I think back on some of the flights I’ve taken, it’s not the movies on that teeny little screen that are memorable. It’s the views of the world below me that stay in my mind. Also – I love the idea of giving experiences or trips instead of gifts as it often leads to making memories that last forever. 🥰 Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Thanks, Aiva. You’re so right, memories are priceless in a way most objects never will be.

  11. Such a great idea to get away on a trip together, rather than buying gifts. I keep thinking of this for awhile, but everything is soo expensive around Christmas time😍

    The aerial views are fantastic!

    1. That’s true, it can be an expensive time to travel. But if you have the flexibility to do a slightly delayed holiday trip I wonder if it would be cheaper?

      1. Yes, for you are right, we only need to look for options!
Have a great weekend Diana, xx

  12. Beautiful pictures! Can’t wait to read on your Yellowstone trip!

    1. Thanks! Hoping to have it up next week!

    1. Thank you!

  13. I love a good sky-shot! Cheers!

  14. So great that you had clear skies for the flight. We often try to pick out the mountains we know when we fly from Calgary to Vancouver. And, what a great idea for your birthday and Christmas celebrations. Maggie

    1. Thanks, Maggie! It’s so fun to see familiar places from above.

  15. Always nice to have the window view and the clear views of the ground. Even better when you recognize the terrain. A great sunset series as well Diana. Have a great Wednesday. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan!

  16. Fantastic photography as always, Diana! I flew into Helena last summer, the views of flying over the Rockies are amazing.

    1. It’s such a scenic flight path!
